How to turn off your water

Step 1: Locate the Main Water Shut-Off Valve

Begin by locating the main water shut-off valve for your home. In most homes, this valve is located near where the water supply enters your house. Common locations include the basement, garage, utility room, or crawl space. It is typically close to where the water meter is installed.

Step 2: Turn Off the Valve

If you have a ball valve, which is a lever-type valve, turn the lever or handle clockwise (to the right) until it is perpendicular to the pipe. This position indicates that the valve is fully closed. If you have a gate valve, which has a round or oval handle, turn it clockwise until it stops. Gate valves may require a bit more force to fully close.

Step 3: Open Taps

After turning off the main water supply, go through your house and open a few taps, both hot and cold, to relieve any pressure in the plumbing system. This will help drain any remaining water from the pipes.

Step 4: Verify the Water is Off

Check a faucet to ensure that no water is flowing. If water continues to flow, recheck the main shut-off valve to ensure it's fully closed. If the valve is stuck or difficult to turn, it may require maintenance or replacement.
